Objective:To describe the characteristics and safety profile of finasteride 1mg and proscar 5mg in the UK.

Design:A prospective, multicentre, multicentre, open-label, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group, parallel group, crossover, single-dose, single-dose, double-dose, double-dose study.

Patients:A total of 11 men with male pattern hair loss (gradual thinning of the hair on the scalp and/or around the temples) and 5 men without any hair loss on the scalp, and 5 men with female pattern hair loss (in the vertex and anterior mid-scalp area) were randomly assigned to receive either finasteride 1mg, finasteride 5mg or placebo (n = 7).

Patients and methods:The primary end points were 1) hair growth and 2) sexual function and 3) post-finasteride therapy (3-4 weeks after the last dose of treatment).

Results:The primary end points were hair growth and 3-4 weeks post-finasteride therapy. At 3-4 weeks post-finasteride therapy, hair growth was not significantly different between the finasteride group and placebo group. The number of new androgenic hairs was significantly greater in the finasteride group than in the placebo group at 3-4 weeks post-finasteride therapy. The number of new androgenic hairs was significantly higher in the finasteride group than in the placebo group at 3-4 weeks post-finasteride therapy. The mean number of new androgenic hairs was also significantly higher in the finasteride group at 3-4 weeks post-finasteride therapy.

Conclusions:The results suggest that finasteride 1mg and finasteride 5mg do not have a strong safety profile for the UK.
